The popularity of the British Gas mass participation swims, the Olympics, features on open water swimming in the Swimming Times and celebrities swimming in various places, including searching for golf balls has captured the imagination of the public. Our decision this year was to award it to Anji Page, who joined us this year, wetsuited and needing to get ready for a mile swim. From a very short initial swim, Anji has shown great enthusiasm and motivation and persisted building up her stamina in a sensible and progressive way. Now swimming multiple laps without the suit and entered into next weeks 6 hour swim to see how far she can go Anji was the obvious choice.

Anji Page is presented with the Endeavour Trophy by President Richard Davies

The Longest Swim trophy is awarded for time rather than distance - for the second year running it has been won by Karen Throsby who was successful in her crossing of the Catalina Channel. Despite being wary of the wildlife - sharks particularly - Karen overcame her fears and has cemented her place among the Worlds longs distance swimmers - and the clubs best performers.

Karen Throsby with the Longest Swim Trophy, presented by Richard Davies.

The Channel Cup records the names of swimmers from the club who have successfully completed a solo or relay crossing. This is also retrospective, so a member who swam many years ago will be recognised too.

Added onto the list this year is Paul Watson, Dan Earthquake, Paul Bates, Stuart Dugmoor, Darren Dyke, Gary Edgington, Richard Brownjohn, Rob Cash and Kevin Moloney. As soon as I can get the others for a photo, I'll put them on this site as well.

Paul Watson, President Richard Davies & Dan Earthquake with the Channel Cup

Kevin Moloney - successful relay 2011 - with President Richard Davies

Finally the John Rickhuss trophy is awarded to the person who gains the most amount of votes from the active membership. There is no criteria. John was the dad of Mark who Big Rick's team remember in their fundraising efforts. It was suggested after he died that the club buy a bench or tree to be planted near the lake, but vandalism and graffitti put us off. Instead the trophy was commissioned, and we remember John each year when we give his trophy to someone deserving. There were multiple nominations this year - Karen Throsby, Paul Bates, Richard Brownjohn, Nicky Alsup and Paul Ingenthron were all suggested, but gaining twice as many votes than anyone else was Paul Watson. Half of the votes were cast due to his persistance and dedication to swimming, whilst the others were because of his help and kindness to other swimmers.

Paul Watson with both the Channel Cup and The John Rickhuss trophy

Karen, Anji, Paul, Jeremy, Richard & Dan

The year has seen some fantastic swims, Billy Bott won all but one of his BLDSA swims, coming second only at Windermere. Big Ricks Team swam everywhere including the Channel. Kevin Moloney clocked another Channel Relay, whilst Paul Watson and Dan Earthquake made it across in the Winter Swimming Council team. Karen Throsby as mentioned before swam the Catalina Channel. There were other great efforts - I will catch up with people in the next few weeks and add photos and details accordingly.

It is a pleasure to be the Secretary of this club, something I am proud to be. Thanks to all the swimmers who make it a fun and entertaining role.

2011 Swimmer of the year.

Every year the active members of the club are canvassed to vote for someone to be the Swimmer of the year. There is no criteria for this award. The winner keeps the John Rickhuss Trophy for a year and is asked to engrave their name onto it. John was one of the founders who sadly died in 2004. Mik Hennessey donated the trophy to the club in his memory.

This year has seen some remarkable efforts. Karen Throsby swam the Catalina Channel. Paul Ingenthron swam 23 miles in the English Channel. The Winter Swimming Council and Big Ricks Team were successful in their Channel Relay attempts. Billy Bott maintained dominance in lake events throughout the UK. Many swimmers made their initial attempts of various events successfully.

Text, email your vote (or give it in person) - presentation to be held at the lake on Sunday 25th September at 1030am.

The committee also awards the Endeavour Trophy to the person felt to have made a significant improvement or achievement.

The person who has swam for the longest time wins "The Longest Swim" trophy.

Successful Channel Solo & Relay team members have their names recorded on the Channel Cup.

2010 Presentation

2010 has seen some exceptional efforts. Darron Corden and Paul Watson trained hard but didn’t get the results they hoped for, it happens like that sometimes. I hope you both enjoy better results next season. We saw a few new people come – and go. Dave Fawkner arrived and got stuck in quite early – a good first season – a successful 2 way Bala, 4 hours of a 2 person Channel Relay and a successful Windermere. As we speak he’s hiking up Kilamanjaro or somewhere nearby. We’ll see more of him I reckon. Billy Bott won everything he entered and broke Darron’s World Record for Ullswater. We get so used to this pair winning everything that we forget how hard they train to achieve it, consistent hard work. Alison Peakman often slips under our radar, she does very well in the races she enters, but often we never hear of them. This year she won the River Dart race and also went to the World Championships where she was inside the top 10 for everything she entered, winning a bronze medal as well. For this reason, we’re awarding Alison Peakman the Endeavour trophy. She can’t be here, but sends her best. Karen Throsby has swam around the outside of Jersey last year and successfully completed a Channel Relay. This year, swimming from Jersey to France as a warm up Karen swam the Channel in 16hrs and 9mins. For this reason, we have introduced a new award which is for the person who achieves the longest swim. That’s Karen this year. All that remains to be done is to swim from Jersey to England and a unique triangle will have been achieved. Next year? The Channel Cup is something I commissioned to remember the members who have swam the channel either solo or relay. We added on Karen’s name this year along with Ali Longman who swam the Channel on August 2nd in a time of 11hrs 09m. Finally we remember our friend John Rickhuss who sadly died in 2004. We had this trophy made which if for the Swimmer of the year, as voted by the active members of the club. It’s usual to have two people who gain a similar amount of votes, but this year we had 6 nominations – Darron, Dave, Karen, Alison, Billy and Ali. Here’s what the nominations said:“Alison Peakman has consistantly trained hard as long as I have known her and competed at the high levels with great success. Her bronze medal at the World Championships in Sweden this year and her other performances - all in the top 10 show her to be an athlete worthy of recognition in a club of such exceptional swimmers.” Dan Earthquake“I vote for Dave because he has had a massive season going from his first open water swim to a successful swim in Windermere. Not many people would be that dedicated and confident (or stupid!!!). He is always happy and enthusiastic. up to try anything and will never say no to an idea however stupid it may seem.” – Tamsin Lane“My vote will be for Darron for his attempt at Loch Lomond, to swim through the night in that lake is something special, and altho he didn't complete it, I know I wouldn't even get in it at 9pm to try it.” - Billy“I'd vote for Billy as I think his dominance of the BLDSA swims says it all this year - well deserved for all the training he puts in.” – Alison Peakman“It's not been an easy decision as I've had 2 people in mind. Darron has been an inspiration to me, even though he' s not achieved his goals this year, he has certainly helped me achieve mine with his presence and encouragement at both Bala and Windemere. My other consideration is Billy, who as you have noted achieved great results all season. As with Darren, Billy has been a source of support at each of my events and each time they were both a reason for me to get to the end, just to avoid the abuse I would probably have been given. With this and his own achievements throughout the season, I would like to vote for Billy.” – Dave Fawkner“My nomination has to go to Karen Throsby. Karen trained really hard over the last couple of years in order to achieve her successful crossing of the English Channel this year. I think Karen should top the bill for demonstrating fantastic determination and strength of character.” – Andy Barrowcliffe“It really is a tough decision and all achievements are truly incredible. Dave has had a brilliant first season, and the record breaking Billy again fantastic, well done to Alison Longman great achievement in swimming the channel. and Alison Peakman with her successes in The World Masters in Sweden. But i have to vote for someone And my vote goes to Karen Throsby for her great commitment to the sport.” – Paul Watson“My vote goes to Ali Longman. She’s an amazing determined swimmer who worked incredibly hard and got the excellent results that she deserved” – Karen Throsby“I feel that Alison Longman deserves the title because of her excellent performance in the 6 hour swim and in the Channel. Particularly the 6 hour swim performance commends her as it's something specific to the club and it's a time when she's really shone. His time was 9 hours, 18 minutes. He returned to a civic reception in Walsall.

Most wins in a season: Darron Corden won all five of the BLDSA races he entered in 2005: Champion of Champions; Lynn Padarn; 2 way Bala; Coniston; & Windermere. He also broke the record for Ullswater by a massive 7 minutes – a minute per mile on the previous best time. Darron swam the Channel in 2006 in arduous conditions – from April to August he swam approximately 300 miles of races and training over 43 sessions.

Most Channel swims. Mike Read accepted an honorary membership of the club in 2006. Mike’s 33 successful crossings earn him the prestigious title of King of the Channel ®, though he tells us of 8 other attempts that were unsuccessful.

Clive Burbage has made 5 unsuccessful solo attempts and taken part in 1 relay team that didn’t make it to France. In 2009 he was a member of the 2 plus 2 team that were successful. He tells us he has swam over 90 miles in the Channel – we hope that luck is with him on his next attempt.

Fastest open water Mile

Matt Wardle – 17:17, Champion of Champions race, 2007.

Jamie Mackay – 17:59, Ashford Mile, 2003?

Darron Cordon – 18:03, Ashford Mile 2005.

Stuart Mackay – 18:05 Ashford Mile, 2005

Unluckiest distance swim

Hannah Lietzau is one of the 73 people who have attempted to swim the treacherous North Channel between Ireland and Scotland. There have been only 11 successful swims by 7 individuals. On one of her three attempts the support boat sank. Hannah had to tread water whilst the boat crew was rescued...

Cold Swims

The following swims were undertaken under CSA rules of one standard costume, one hat with optional goggles. No grease was used. Comparisons are difficult as some days have better conditions: weather, wind chill and air temperature all affect performance. Was the 1900m at 37oF harder than the 3200m at 41oF? Having done both, I say yes. Every degree below 45 has a detrimental effect on the time spent in the water, though there have not been enough swims to determine any sort of pattern that can be discerned that takes into account all the variables. The following list is subjective, but seems sensible.

Name Distance Time Temp Date Stroke

1 Dan Earthquake 1000m 20 mins ish 33oF Dec 31st 2009 Face in front crawl
2 Dan Earthquake treadwater 27 mins 23 secs 37oF Jan 4th 2009 airtemp 28oF
3 Tamsin Lane treadwater 27min 37oF Jan 4th 2009 airtemp 28oF
4 Dan Earthquake 1900m 50 minutes 37oF Feb 10th 2008 Front Crawl
5 Tamsin Lane 1600m 47 minutes 37oF Feb 10th 2008 Head up Breast Stroke
6 Derek Jones 1000m 36 minutes 37oF Feb 10th 2008 Head up Breast Stroke
7 Dan Earthquake 3200m 1hour 15m 41oF Dec 31st 2006 Front Crawl
8 Dan Earthquake 1250m 31 minutes 40oF Dec 31st, 2007 Front Crawl
9 Tamsin Lane 1000m 29 minutes 52s 40oF Dec 31st, 2007 Head up Breast Stroke
10 Dan Earthquake 0000m 10 minutes 34oF Feb 17th, 2008

6 hour swims

SurvivaLifeguard Channel Swimming Club/ Birmingham Lifeguard Club 6 Hour Training Days

Entry Form

Name _______________________________________________________________

Address______________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________

Tel No. (mobile preferred)__________________________________

Previous open water experience over 1 mile (minimum entry requirement) _____________________________________________________________________

Which event are you entering? October 2nd 2011 8am - 2pm.

Fee (£30 per session, cheques payable to Birmingham Lifeguards) £40 on the day

Disclaimer I understand that open water swimming can be dangerous and confirm that I consider myself medically fit to take part in the event(s). Goggles and grease optional.

Feed stops must be of reasonable duration. Feed stops longer than 2 minutes or exiting the water for any reason will be deemed to be a retirement. Feeding may take place at the quayside nearest the lap counter/referee. Swimmers who disregard the safety instructions by swimming over or endangering others in any way will be disqualified. On completion of each lap the swimmer must shout out their name. This helps the lap counter and also helps establish the swimmer is still able to think clearly.

Safety Rules

The lifeguard safety team may stop the event or any individual if they deem it necessary to do so. Swimmers who appear to be disorientated or in poor condition will be approached by the safety team who will shout the “Good?” If a similar response is not gained ie “Yes/Okay/Good” then they will take steps to remove the swimmer from the water for their own safety. All swimmers will be required to carry a whistle (included in entry fee). One long blast indicates a problem. Also turning onto back and raising an arm is a recognised signal. If help is needed, simply say the word “Help” to a member of the rescue team for immediate assistance. Entry and exit to the lake must be made via the slipway. Old shoes or flip flops are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED as we cannot guarantee the absence of sharp stones or foreign objects underfoot. Swimmers may bring their own supporters/canoeists if desired, but all craft must be fit for purpose and canoeists must be equipped with whistle, buoyancy aid, bright coloured hat and suitable paddle before entering the water. From the M5 Motorway, follow signs for Birmingham and Handsworth. Be aware of Speed camera 30mph immediately as you exit roundabout. Pass West Bromwich Albion football stadium on right and indicate left. Turn into Park Lane which is a very winding road. When you hit speed bumps, slow down, indicate left and turn into Swan Pool Car Park. All memberships expire at the end of the calendar year and are subject to renewal at the start of each season. A membership fee will be determined each year at the club’s AGM to cover public liability insurance, swimming hats, safety equipment, and any other reasonable costs incurred.

The club meets predominately at Swan Pool. The standard open water season runs approximately May to September, though variable weather may extend or shorten this season. The club has been allocated the following training times at Swan Pool: Sunday Mornings - exit water by 1100am. Monday Evenings – 630pm to dusk. Wednesday 630pm to dusk for 3 mile swimmers only. Solo early morning/late evening swimmers are advised not swim without a member of the safety team present. The club also holds channel swimming and lifeguard training sessions in Folkestone on the Sunny Sands and pebble beaches at prearranged times. Between the dates of October 1st and April 1st, swimming in Swan Pool is limited to members of the Safety team only. An annual general meeting will be held each year in the winter season to discuss membership issues and the forthcoming season. Other meetings will be held as required.

Safety. Open water swimming is a natural activity which promotes good health and fitness amongst regular practitioners. Drowning, muscle cramps, hypothermia and exhaustion are risks that can be prevented by common sense and preparation. Before entering the water a swimmer must assess: individual fitness and ability; water quality and temperature; weather conditions; potential hazards and adhere to any safety instructions as laid down by the site owners, Lifeguards or club committee.

Swimmers in Swan Pool must wear a bright coloured swimming hat, 1 is provided by the club. The only exception to this rule is when an organised rescue session in “passer by” clothes is scheduled. In this instance, extra rescue cover will be made to lessen the risk. Each swimmer is required to carry a whistle which is also provided. One long blast signifies to the lifeguards that there is a swimmer in difficulty requiring assistance. If a swimmer hears the whistle blast, they should look in their immediate area and assist if possible until help arrives. This will be practiced at regular intervals.

Swimming in Swan Pool takes place outside the marker buoys in an anti - clockwise direction. The central area is kept clear for rescue craft to operate unhindered. Members must be aware of fishermen and not interfere with their activities by swimming too close to the bank. Consideration must be afforded to other clubs who swim at the lake – members must not obstruct the racing line between buoys at any time or swim over any other user who may obstruct them.

Safety Team members with access to the quayside at Swan Pool will carry first aid kit, blankets and mobile phone in their vehicles, and be identified to the members by the committee at the start of the season. Safety team members may provide canoe patrols/support and there will be regular safety training sessions. Canoeists must wear a buoyancy aid and hat of some kind. Rescue boards do not require buoyancy aids, but hats are necessary.

The club is against the prevalent compensation culture that has developed and actively seeks to combat this by requiring individual responsibility of its members. It is a condition of membership that each swimmer recognises that the club and site owners can in no way be held responsible for any loss, injury or illness that results in their participation in any activity through membership of the club. Failure to adhere to safety instructions may result in termination of membership.

A bank account will be operated by at least two signatories for the use of making payments to professional bodies/insurers. Accounts will be presented to the AGM and the secretary will keep a list of properties owned by or loaned to the club.

The constitution may be altered by agreement of members at an AGM.

Dissolution of the club may only be by majority agreement of the members and committee. In the event of dissolution, all debts and liabilities will be discharged, and anything loaned will be returned to its owner. Any properties and monies left in the club account will be donated to a lifeguard/swimming club of similar interest.
